Measurement of Light-Emitting Diodes

  • Optical measurement units used for measurement of single LEDs, LED arrays and LED lamps define the measurement geometry.
In many light measurement and qualification documents photometers are listed based on DIN 5032 T7 reference classes. These photometer classifications are not applicable to the measurement of LEDs.
LED binning in permanent operation. Light-emitting-diodes offer nuances in their light spectrum that are perceivable by the human eye. Therefore they are sorted by color and intensity.
LED binning in flash mode operation is necessary for economic reasons, when huge numbers of LEDs need to be sorted.
Luminous intensity distribution of LEDs and LEDs mounted in luminaires is an important parameter for quality and efficiency evaluation of the optical design. This measurement is done with a goniophotometer.
Pulsed monochromatic LEDs are used in battery powered sensor applications as proximity switches and distance meters. White LEDs are used in camera flash units. Both applications require LED pulse shape information.
