Measurement of Luminaires

  • Optical radiation can pose a health risk to the skin and eyes. Guidelines describe the measures for product classification and continuous control at the site of operation and the methods of radiation hazard measurement.
    Light Measurement of Light-Emitting Diodes differs in several ways from measurement of traditional light sources. These details must be considered when choosing measurement devices and applying them.
    Light measurement in UV and blue light curing applications
    Accelerated polymerisation in photocureable chemicals like lacquers and adhesives is initiated via irradiation of photoinitiators with optical radiation in the highly energetic blue and ultraviolet spectral regions.
    UV-A sources used for fluorescence stimulation (Liquid Penetrant Testing) in NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) must be measured under the aspects of UVA radiation, UV-A white light contrast and light hazard.
    Light sources used in phototherapeutic applications must be qualified for effectiveness in the application and periodically checked for on-going efficacy. In phototherapy practice a measured dose of optical radiation is delivered to the subject.
    Plant Growth Radiation Optical radiation is responsible for plant growth in terms of photosynthesis, height and width. Lamps and filtered daylight are measured with respect to effects on plant growth, aquaculture and soil science.
    Solar Simulators light sources are designed to mimic the sun’s optical radiation output. They are used in light degradation and stability studies of textiles and materials and for efficiency evaluation in photovoltaic cells.
    Fiber-optics in rigid and flexible design conduct light and optical radiation to remote and inaccessible locations or are used for optical data/information transfer.
    Flashing lights emit high intensity short light pulses for increased conspicuity. Continuous modulated light helps to reduce the average power and therefore thermal loss at the source.
