Applications, Technical Notes
Our handbook Measurement of Light and Measurement with Light discusses the characteristics of light and optical radiation, describes relevant measurement units and measurement techniques and explains the integrating sphere and its typical applications.
Technical Note: Flashed LEDs for pulsed light applications are operated in high power mode with short pulse widths and long duty cycle for low average power loss. A very effective heat sink structure on the LED is required to limit power loss and color changes as a result of any increase in junction temperature during the flash. This technical note describes a flash light meter with data-logger function manufactured by Gigahertz-Optik GmbH to measure the luminous flux and luminous color stability during the flash.
Technical Note: Compact Fluorescent Lamps CFL are an effective alternative to incandescent lamps offering higher efficiency and longer life time. The light measurement quantities to qualify the CFL are luminous flux, color temperature, spectral flux distribution and switch on-time. The best cost and time effective measurement instrumentation for these applications are integrating spheres equipped with light meter for luminous flux and color temperature. This technical note explains how to measure flux, spectrum, color and switch on time of CFL using the Gigahertz-Optiks BTS256-LED light analyzer.
Technical Note: Indirect incident light falling on displays, as under day light conditions, reduces display contrast by washing out blackness and color. For product research and quality control the Luminance Contrast and Luminance Color Contrast of displays needs to be measured. Ambient contrast specifies actual contrast conditions. For ambient contrast measurements the display under test must be illuminated. A simple way to simulate indirect lighting is through hemispherical illumination using an integrating sphere light source. This technical note describes different ways to use integrating spheres for hemispherical illumination.
